10 reasons to do a yoga teacher training – even if you don’t plan to teach afterwards

Step into a world of boundless possibilities, where lasting friendships bloom, purpose finds its voice, nature becomes your sanctuary, and new routines seamlessly entwine with your days. Explore the myriad reasons why a yoga teacher training is a life-altering experience

1. Detox and Start Anew

When we form habits, it becomes difficult to let them go. We all know it. The daily glass of wine in the evening after work or the cigarette in between, the extra portion of food even though you’re already full – habits that hold us captive and make time flow by. A Yoga Teacher Training can help us recognize these patterns and rewrite our own program. We learn to develop new routines for ourselves. Through healthy eating, we find more clarity and manage to break free from these patterns. A month-long training is a new beginning in life. And this new beginning is always possible, no matter how old we are. We have time to let go of our old life.

2. My Body is My Holy Temple

When our bodies struggle to function and are susceptible to illness or our minds race endlessly, lacking rest, it’s a sign of imbalance in life. Yoga creates connections between body, mind, and soul. During a Yoga training, we learn to listen to our body’s signals and calm our mind. A healthy body is like a temple that needs to be kept clean, cared for, and treated like a holy place every day. This is the only way we feel comfortable in it and can live life to the fullest. If you neglect the needs of your body and soul, it won’t take long for your psyche to become ill. Yoga helps to create unity and balance between our parts. Daily asana practice strengthens the body and cleanses from within. During meditation, we can train the mind and connect with our real being. By training the mind and mastering the flow of thoughts, we can use it specifically instead of being driven around and irritated by it.

3. Battery Recharge – A Month’s Break Just for Me

We all have responsibilities—family, work—that make it seem impossible to take a break. Yet, even amidst caring for our loved ones and earning our livelihoods, we need moments of reflection and rejuvenation. Sometimes we feel stuck but don’t know how to regain our strength. Every day seems the same and flies by. If you take a month to leave everyday life behind, you can take your life in completely new directions. Because with the distance and time out, we suddenly see our lives from a new angle. We notice what potential lies dormant within us. With new routines and a more mindful lifestyle, we learn to see the world in a new way. This includes a conscious and healthy diet, as well as mindful exercises in the morning to prepare us for the day. In the Yoga Teacher Training, we learn techniques to consciously start the day and face every task in life, to work with more concentration and to calm down or gain new strength in difficult situations. In training, we learn to use our strengths consciously and specifically and to organize our everyday lives in such a way that it is good for us so that we can do good for others.

4. First Do What Is Good for You – Then Help Others

Often, we prioritize the needs of others before our own. Yet, how can we truly help others if we’re unfamiliar with tending to our own well-being? Many people suffer from neglect. Expectations from others, obligations, and a lack of self-love can be reasons. In a Yoga Teacher Training, we learn to take care of our own needs and those of others. It’s a give and receive, a balance of energies. By working with our energy body (chakras), we also learn to deal with our emotions better and allow them instead of repressing them or simply ignoring them. In addition, a Yoga Training is always about working with other people. We can learn to give love and receive love. The more we love ourselves and meet our needs, the more we can love and support others unconditionally

5. Friends and Community for Life

During a Yoga Teacher Training, strangers from all corners of the globe come together, leaving as a tight-knit family. Over a month, shared learning, laughter, emotional journeys, and celebrations forge connections that can last a lifetime. In a training, we experience ourselves in others. We experience how similar we all actually are. This can create connections and friendships for life. This community is unique and one of the most valuable experiences during a training. Yoga means “union” – not only with ourselves, but also with others.

6. Finding a Connection to God

Yoga is an ancient tradition encompassing dozens of styles and thousands of techniques, all united by a singular purpose: discovering the divinity within and forging a connection with the highest consciousness. In yoga language, the True Self is called ‚Atma‘ and the ultimate reality, Supreme Cosmic Spirit is called ‚Brahman‘. This may sound strange from today’s perspective, since many of us go to the yoga studio to do yoga on the mat, strengthen the body and calm the mind. But yoga is so much more. All asanas in the Hatha traditions for example serve the purpose of being able to stay in the lotus position and establish the divine connection there through meditation. It doesn’t matter what we believe in or what name we give to God – through yoga we learn to feel Divinity. This is different than just believing or reading about it. Yoga opens the gates to another sphere that is deeply rooted in us and wants to be discovered. The wonderful thing about yoga is that it is not dogmatic. It doesn’t force anyone to believe in anything or follow any commandments. For example, it teaches us to connect with universal consciousness through chanting mantras. But through the practices we have the chance to experience this divine connection. Because through singing we learn to open our hearts and connect with others. Bhakti yoga and mantras are an important part of every professional training. Starting the morning singing together creates this divine connection and feels simply fantastic.

7. Dive into Nature

A Yoga Training unfolds in natural settings, far removed from the clamor of cities and the humdrum of daily life. Whether by the sea, a lake, in the mountains, or amidst a forest, it’s an idyllic environment to immerse oneself for a month. Daily practice sensitizes the senses, makes us more attentive and allows us to notice more around us, really feel nature and learn to love it. A morning meditation with the sounds of the birds, the sound of the ocean or in delicious silence is like music for our soul. The longing for nature lies dormant in all of us. During a yoga training, we can awaken and truly experience ourselves through nature.

8. Yoga is a Way of Life

Yoga encompasses every facet of life, extending far beyond the mat. It encompasses dietary choices, actions, inactions, and how we interact with others. Through yoga philosophy, we can learn that yoga, the phenomenon of union, can be achieved in different ways. These are the 4 paths of yoga. Karma Yoga is one of these paths. This does not mean the point system for good and bad actions, as it is often mistakenly understood, but rather selfless service by following our purpose in life (Dharma) without waiting for the fruits of our labor. Recognizing that we are more than an ego with desires and expectations solves many of our problems. Service to the community, for the benefit of others, be they people, animals or nature, gives our lives meaning

9. Find Your Purpose and Make a Wise Decision

In a Yoga Training, we embark on a journey within ourselves to unearth our true essence and unravel our life’s purpose. Finding this out can be one of the most amazing moments in life. In a yoga training, we get so close to ourselves that we have the time and sensitivity to listen to our inner voice and hear what we need and what decisions need to be made. With these new insights, we can realign our everyday lives and finally do what is intended for us. Follow your own life goal.

10. Find Out for Yourself What Yoga Is

In philosophy, there exist countless definitions of yoga and various practices to achieve specific goals, such as enhancing meditation, opening the heart, or improving interpersonal relationships. In a yoga training, we discover completely new ways to think about ourselves and the world through yoga philosophy. When we interact with others, we see how other people think and feel, we learn to deal with our emotions and those of others more skillfully. Philosophy stimulates the mind and inspires us to see the world through different eyes. In the end, what matters is what we extract from all the knowledge of the yoga traditions and integrate into our lives. In a Yoga Teacher training, we transform knowledge into wisdom.
